Simplifying and succeeding in delivery at Spice Club Indian Cuisine

Cultivating a love for authentic Indian cuisine and bringing it to Toronto
Spice Club Indian Cuisine located in Scarborough, Toronto isn’t the only Indian restaurant in town, but it may be the most authentic. Founder Parash has always loved food, and was inspired to begin cooking after spending his childhood in the kitchen with his late grandmother, “My grandmother was always cooking the most delicious food when I was a kid, and I was always looking for ways to be of assistance to her in the kitchen. When she passed away, I finished college and went back to India to learn how to cook authentic Indian cuisine in Mumbai.”
“He was always an amazing cook,” adds sister Bishnu, “especially after he finished studying Indian cuisine in Mumbai.” But Parash didn’t immediately open his own restaurant, instead, he moved to Canada and began working in various restaurants to learn the business side of things. “I’ve worked at several restaurants since moving to Canada in 2004, and over the 14 years I spent working in the industry, my passion for food only grew. In 2018, I decided to start something myself. With some help from my sister, we launched Spice Club in 2019.”
Creating a community around Momo’s and Tikka Masala
Spice Club Indian Cuisine was instantly popular in Toronto. Parash and Bishnu’s restaurant is well known for their Nepalese momos – small dumplings filled with ground chicken or vegetables — as well as their Tikka Masala made in a tandoor oven.
“Ever since we’ve opened the restaurant, we’ve relied on indoor dining. People love to come to Spice Club and experience the food and the environment. Before (the pandemic hit ) we were always busy on Thursday and Friday nights, and we usually had a birthday party happening in our party room. The pandemic took all that away.”
Navigating the transition to majority delivery in the midst of the pandemic
Parash mentioned that transitioning to majority delivery in the midst of the pandemic wasn’t impossible because Spice Club had always been on various delivery platforms, but it was far from a convenient experience.
“When delivery was only a portion of our business, it wasn’t as hard to keep up with writing down orders by hand and manually entering orders into our POS system. But when the delivery orders began increasing rapidly, that system wasn’t sustainable. On top of that, we had to manage five tablets. When it got busy, we were missing orders. I knew there had to be an easier way.”
Simplifying and succeeding in delivery with Otter
Parash and Bishnu discovered Otter and their delivery business became easier to manage immediately. “With Otter, we never miss orders. Having one tablet rather than five saves us time and helps us not get overwhelmed in a rush.”
Although Parash and Bishnu long for the day when they can open their party room and watch guests’ faces light up as they enjoy Spice Club’s authentic Indian cuisine, Otter has made maintaining their business possible during this difficult time. “While we’re unable to interact with our customers face-to-face right now, it’s really fulfilling to know that they are getting their food on time, as they ordered it. We’ve even had some customers who’ve discovered Spice Club on delivery platforms and have since become regulars!”
Utilizing Otter for time saving, tablet consolidation, increased order fulfillment and partnership
“In addition to helping us save time, consolidate tablets, and ensure we aren’t missing any orders, the team at Otter has been very supportive of us during this difficult time.” You can support Parash and Bishnu by ordering from Spice Club Cuisine on Skip the Dishes, Doordash, and Uber Eats.
